Grappling fundamentals

Outside of research, there is but one other discipline that takes you to the limit of what your mind and body can sustain. Join us for a grappling seminar on the lawn next to the disco to find out more!

The art of gently submitting your opponents to your will is part of many fighting systems, most notably Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Ju-Jutsu, Sambo and probably many more. Here's a video to give you a rough idea of what this looks like (at a very high level):

A couple of pointers before you join:

  • This is a martial art where hitting and throwing is forbidden, so there are no hard impacts to the body. If sparring partners take care of each other, injury risk is minimal. Still, it is a full-contact sport: you will be doing a lot of hugging = trying to control your opponent with your technique, strength and weight, so you need to be comfortable with that level of proximity to your fellow homo sapiens.

  • Any clothing is ok, but a pair of shorts and a tight t-shirt are best (ideally, fight shorts and a rash guard). However, since we will be doing this on the grass, make sure you choose clothes that you are not sentimentally attached to, as they will likely get very dirty, possibly irreversibly so.

  • Also because of the grass, it's likely that your knees and elbows will be a bit scratched afterwards, especially if it's your first time. Nothing serious, but also nonzero.

Other than that, there is absolutely no requirement to join! If you have never done this before, sparring will be the workout of your life - not to mention the extreme satisfaction of truly controlling your opponent on the ground. If you have some experience with grappling, all the better! Then you can help with instructing the beginners!
